The winner, Dark Defender (GB), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at York on 10 July 2021, where the gelding finished seventeenth of nineteen, beaten by 12½ lengths.
Harvey Bastiman’s explanation that the gelding benefited from a return to Soft going was noted.
Dark Defender (GB) was routine tested.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference turning out of the home bend when the winner, Dark Defender (GB), ridden by Sam James, interfered with Zumurud (IRE), placed second, ridden by Dougie Costello, which in turn interfered with Oso Rapido (IRE), placed eighth, ridden by Jason Hart.
The Stewards considered that the interference had not improved Dark Defender (GB)’s placing as Dark Defender (GB) was always holding Zumurud (IRE) and the momentum lost was less than the winning margin of ¾ length.
James was suspended for 2 days for careless riding as he had manoeuvred right-handed towards the rail when insufficiently clear of Zumurud (IRE), which in turn caused Hart to take a precautionary check on Oso Rapido (IRE).
Following the race, Jamie Gormley reported that Magical Effect (IRE), placed sixth, was denied a clear run approaching 1½ furlongs out.
