Punchestown Day 1 Tips
The third Grade One race today, the Champion Novices Chase over three miles, has a much more open look to it despite Willie Mullins being represented by four of the six runners. Henry De Bromhead’s Journey With Me is shading favouritism at 11/4 with BoyleSports having won twice over fences this season including last time at Naas, but he looked well-held by one of today’s rivals, Classic Getaway, when falling at Gowran in November. Classic Getaway hasn’t been seen since that victory so his fitness will have to be taken on trust.
Danny Mullins, who won on Classic Getaway at Gowran, keeps the ride while stable jockey Paul Townend has opted to stick with Appreciate It which tries this distance for the first time since his point-to-point days. Sir Gerhard, the mount of Patrick Mullins, was over four lengths ahead of Appreciate It at Fairyhouse last time so must also have strong claims in a very tricky puzzle.
Jockey arrangements for the Mullins camp in the opening Mares Novices Hurdle are somewhat unexpected with Townend picking Fairyhouse puller upper Night And Day ahead of the more experienced Saylavee and Nikini. Gordon Elliott bagged this race last year with a well-supported runner and it may pay to stick with his sole representative Shecouldbeanything. This mare has run well in defeat several times this season including when finishing fifth in the Mares Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Elliott is mob-handed in the confined Bumper on the card with 6 of the 17 runners and while most of the field have yet to race on the track it might be a shrewd move to stick with his Speculatrix. The four-year-old won on debut over the course and distance in February and due to the unique conditions of this race escapes a penalty.
The Kildare Hunt Club’s Ladies Cup race over the banks course could easily go the way of Vital Island for the second consecutive year. The eleven-year-old is a specialist over banks and can once again put his experience to good use.
Punchestown Day 2 Tip
Gaelic Warrior 5.20pm Wed, 26th Apr, 2023, Irish Mirror Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Gaelic Warrior ran a fine race at Cheltenham when chasing home his impressive stablemate Impaire Et Passe in the Ballymore Novices Hurdle. That first attempt over an extended distance of two miles and five furlongs posed no problems for Gaelic Warrior and it’s most likely this slightly longer trip will be even more to his liking.
Punchestown Day 3 Tip
Monkfish 5.25pm, Thu, 27th Apr, 2023, Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1)
Monkfish, the 2021 Brown Advisory Novice Chase winner at Cheltenham, returned from two years on the sidelines at Fairyhouse over Easter and showed he had lost none of his ability when a gallant second to Asterion Forlonge over hurdles. Sticking to the smaller obstacles here he certainly has the class to be a major contender with significant improvement on the cards.
In the final race of the day Apple’s Of Bresil is worth a second look, the Barry Connell newcomer is well related and out of French miler Take A Chance, who incidentally won first time out. This promising type is held in high regard by connections.
Punchestown Day 4 Tip
Echoes In Rain, Fri, 28th Apr, 2023, Paddy Power Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
My third selection is again trained by Willie Mullins who is set to dominate across the week at Punchestown. The Champion Trainer has the hot-favourite for this contest in the shape of State Man, but it may pay to have an each-way interest on another runner from the yard, Echoes In Rain. She finished fourth to Honeysuckle in the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham on her most recent start where the two miles and four furlongs would have stretched her stamina reserves. Back to two miles here and receiving the 7lbs sex allowance she won’t be far away.
