The following horses all ran at Ayr the previous day: Cold Stare (IRE), trained by David O'Meara, finished second; B Associates (IRE), trained by Jim Goldie, finished eighth; Novak (GB), trained by Iain Jardine, finished sixteenth.

Having been examined by the Veterinary Officer, all three geldings were deemed fit to race.

Permission was given for Riot (IRE) to wear a red hood to the start, Manigordo (USA) and Outrun The Storm (IRE) to go early to post and Angel From Above (IRE) to be mounted in the chute.

Approximately 2½ furlongs out, there was interference between Riot (IRE), placed fifth, Novak (GB), unplaced, and Gainsbourg (GB), unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was not possible to apportion blame.

Inside the final two furlongs, Novak (GB), unplaced, edged left-handed at the same time as Old Smoke (IRE), unplaced, edged right-handed, causing a weakening Gainsbourg (GB), unplaced, to be short of room and its rider to take a check, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved.

Inside the final furlong, Craven (GB), placed second, edged left-handed, carrying Phoenix Fire (IRE), placed fourth, slightly off its intended line, which in turn interfered with Outrun The Storm (IRE), unplaced, whose rider had to check momentarily, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Craven (GB).

The performance of Old Smoke (IRE), which finished unplaced, was considered.

The representative of Richard Fahey could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance.

Old Smoke (IRE) was routine tested.

Following the race, Daniel Tudhope reported that Riot (IRE), placed fifth, suffered interference 3 furlongs out; Jason Hart reported that Gainsbourg (GB), unplaced, suffered interference inside the final 2½ furlongs; William Pyle reported that Novak (GB), unplaced, hung right-handed and stumbled turning into the home straight and Oisin Orr reported that Outrun The Storm (IRE), unplaced, suffered interference inside the final furlong.
