An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Marshella (IRE) ridden by Harrison Beswick and trained by Oliver Signy, to ascertain why the rider had allowed Marshella (IRE) to drop gradually back through the field from a prominent position without any effort or assistance from the saddle, before being pulled up prior to the 3rd last hurdle, on entering the home straight.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to line up and ride the filly prominently.
He added that he reported at scales Marshella (IRE) did not handle the Soft, Good to Soft in places ground on this occasion, in addition to stating that Marshella (IRE) had hung badly left-handed which he had not reported at scales.
He continued that he was riding on one rein throughout as a result and knew from early on that it was not Marshella’s (IRE) day due to the unsuitable ground, something the connections were mindful of prior to running, with the mare having won on Good ground at Fakenham on her sole previous start.
It was for this reason that Beswick allowed Marshella (IRE) to weaken without any assistance from the saddle.
Beswick’s explanation was noted, but he was fined £140 for failing to report at scales that Marshella (IRE) had hung badly left during the race.
