James Doyle, the rider of Mickey Donovan (IRE), which finished sixth of 6 finishers, beaten by 26 ½ lengths, was interviewed regarding the riding of his mount, as it appeared that he kept a firm hold of the gelding’s head and did not ask for any effort during the race.
Doyle was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Mickey Donovan (IRE) during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
He explained that gelding hung violently right- handed throughout the race, a matter he reported at scales.
He further added that due to the Mickey Donovan (IRE) being un-steerable he feared that if he let the horse down, it would result in gelding going through the running rails, so he felt prudent that he kept a hold of the Mickey Donovan (IRE) and ride the remainder of the race in his own time.
His explanation was noted.
