An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Whatwouldyouknow (IRE), ridden by Rowan Scott and trained by Nigel Tinkler, which after breaking on terms with the field, was restrained and allowed to drift back to settle at the rear, before being asked for an effort approximately 2½ furlongs out, whereupon it stayed on and made ground under considerate handling in the home straight to finish eighth of eleven runners, beaten by 8¼ lengths.

The rider and the trainer's representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race, whilst the trainer was interviewed by telephone; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.

The rider stated his instructions were to jump out from the wide draw in stall 9 and get in the best he could to find cover and give Whatwouldyouknow (IRE) a chance to find its feet and travel.

Scott explained that after receiving slight pressure from both sides upon leaving the stalls, he quickly formed the view that to avoid being trapped deep going into the first bend, steadying his mount to the rear of the field and finding a position closer to the rail would be his best option.

He added the moderate tempo of the race thereafter didn't play to Whatwouldyouknow's (IRE) strengths and consequently he was trying to mount a challenge from an unpromising position after leaving the back straight.

He further added that the gelding was initially tapped for toe when the pace increased passing the 3 furlong marker, before gradually being able to improve his position down the home straight, until being checked in his run near the ½ furlong marker, by a weakening Sky Lake, which had lugged quickly right-handed into his path.

Scott further indicated that Whatwouldyouknow (IRE) may benefit from being stepped back up in trip and could also be seen to better effect by settling more prominently when receiving a favourable draw.

The representative of Nigel Tinkler was unable to confirm the instructions as she was unaware of what they were, however Mr Tinkler expressed a level of satisfaction with the ride, but also acknowledged that the gelding had got further back than desirable on this occasion and was not well placed to mount his challenge the way the race unfolded.

In addition, Nigel Tinkler was fined £290 for failing to inform his representative of the rider’s instructions.

Following the race, Hollie Doyle reported that Carey Street (IRE), unplaced, stopped quickly; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
