An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Ardbruce (IRE), ridden by Jeremiah McGrath and trained by Seamus Mullins, which was dropped in and raced at the rear of the field to finish fifth of twelve under apparent tender handling to be beaten by 27 ½ lengths.

The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.

The rider stated that his instructions were to drop the gelding in, get him to switch off and finish his race, having raced keenly last time.

He added that he had managed to settle Ardbruce (IRE) at the rear of the field on this occasion where the gelding still raced keenly.

He further stated that he had made headway half-way down the back straight on the final circuit but did not want to ask Ardbruce (IRE) for an effort too soon on the heavy ground, and added that he had given the gelding a hands and heels ride in the home straight where he stayed on past tired horses.

The trainer stated that he was satisfied with the ride and that it accorded with the instructions given.

Their explanations were noted.

However, McGrath was fined £140 for failing to report that Ardbruce (IRE) was hanging right-handed on the final bend turning into the home straight.

Following the race, Gavin Sheehan reported that Beaufort (IRE), unplaced, raced awkwardly throughout.
