Zaidpour impresses at Punchestown
Willie Mullins unearthen another potential star at Punchestown today when his Zaidpour ran out an effortless winner of the albeit uncompetitive Punchestown Annual Membership Maiden Hurdle. Sat 13th Nov
It was straight-forward and the conditions of the race suited,. I thought the ground was probably still too good for him and Ruby said he felt it a bit. We'll motor on now The Hatton's Grace looks the obvious thing to do now I suppose. He'll go three miles the first opportunity we get. Three miles on soft ground is what we want with him. Hopefully he'll improve a bit but he is good fresh and is best early in the season.

He came back in very strong. We put cheekpieces on him at Fairyhouse and they worked well. I took them off as I thought he would be too free over three miles, but he was very free without them.

It was a fantastic result and he's stronger this year. A lot of my horses didn't do well on grass but they seem stronger. They came in looking a bit rough but the mental break is good for them rather than the grass itself. We might go down the World Hurdle route. I think he'll improve. He's good enough to run in a Champion Hurdle but the obvious thing would be to go over a longer trip. I doubt he'll take on Hurricane Fly but he'll be entered for all the races over Christmas. He has the pace for two miles but he has plenty of stamina as well. It depends on what runners we have but I'd imagine he'll go further . over two and a half or three miles. Himself and Thousand Stars fall into the same kind of bracket. I have to give a lot of credit to Virginie who rides him out all the time. She does a lot of slow work on him and keeps him right as he had shoulder trouble when we got him.

That was straight forward enough. He jumped well and showed lots of speed,. He did it well and if I could find another nice race like that I would.

The tactics and ride won it for him. Ruby gave him a very sharp ride. I don't know where he'll go at Cheltenham, the Champion or the World Hurdle. Today's race wasn't a trial for either race as they went no gallop but his connections would like to run at Cheltenham. That's his ground.

That was a good performance. He is starting to do what I thought he'd do last year. I've a new girl riding him out, and she seems to be doing a good job. She's (Virginie Bascop) a former dressage rider. He's doing a lot of work on the sand and that seems to be paying off. He's holding his action better. The most important thing for him is to be able to keep his action, he lost it last year.

It's grand to see him do that over two miles and six furlongs, and he seems to be stronger and happier than he was in the second half of last season. He'll probably go next for the Grade 2 Tara Hurdle at Navan, and will stay hurdling this season. I'm not sure which way we will go distance wise, and it's possible he could still drop back down in trip this season.

He was a real bargain (80,000 Euros at the Arqana Saint-Cloud 'Arc de Triomphe' Sale in October 2009). We would have probably given two or three times that price for him.

he showed me today what he had been telling me at home!. I would not be afraid to drop him back in trip as he has plenty of gears. We've plenty of time with him but he may run in the Royal Bond Hurdle at Fairyhouse on November 28 next.
