An enquiry was held to consider why Ian Williams was running Shady Mccoy (USA) here at Ascot on going described as Good to Soft, having declared the gelding a non-runner at Newbury on 20 July 2019 on ground with the same official description.
The trainer stated that, in his opinion, the ground at Newbury was riding tacky having been raced on the previous day with the ground additionally drying throughout the day on that occasion, and he was therefore happy for the gelding to take its chance at Ascot with the course having received some recent rainfall.
The performance of Normandy Barriere (IRE), which started second favourite and finished unplaced, was considered.
Nigel Tinkler could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance.
Approaching the 2 furlong marker, the winner, Redarna (GB), edged slightly left-handed intimidating Ower Fly (GB), unplaced, onto Big Storm Coming (GB), unplaced, causing it to briefly denied a clear run, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Redarna (GB).
Following the race, Miss Emma Sayer reported that the winner, Redarna (GB), hung left-handed under pressure; the gelding was routine tested.
