An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Belabour (GB), ridden by Miss Becky Brisbourne and trained by Mark Brisbourne, which was held up in last place and was detached from the main body of the field, before being asked for an effort approaching 2 furlongs out, to finish fifth, beaten 1 length.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated her instructions were to drop the gelding in, get into a rhythm before making her effort in the home straight.
She further added that Belabour (GB) does not like being crowded so didn’t want to make her challenge in between runners, and therefore kept the gelding wide.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions, adding that Belabour (GB) is a quirky type at home and the rider was told to take her time.
Miss Brisbourne was suspended for 14 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures in that she had made her effort too late to obtain the best possible placing.
Following the race, Mr Tamby Welch reported that Punkawallah (GB), unplaced, was never travelling and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination during routine testing revealed the gelding had bled from the nose.
