An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Byzantine Empire (GB), ridden by Paddy Brennan and trained by Fergal O'Brien, which raced keenly when held up at the rear of the field before being asked for an effort in the home straight and stayed on from the second-last fence to finish fifth, beaten by 13½ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions had been to get Byzantine Empire (GB) settled bearing in mind it was the gelding’s first run over hurdles and then make his best way home from there.
He added that Byzantine Empire (GB) ran very enthusiastically in the early stages, a fact he had reported at Scales, however he was happy with the way the gelding had moved and jumped.
He further added that Byzantine Empire (GB) had only settled after jumping the final hurdle in the back straight and had tired in the closing stages and he was therefore pleased with the gelding’s finishing position.
The trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied the ride accorded with those instructions.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Alex Edwards reported that Osprey Call (IRE), which started favourite and finished second, ran too freely and Joshua Moore reported that Rocco Du Berlais (IRE), which was pulled up, hung right-handed.
