The Stewards enquired into an incident in the closing stages involving Black Hawk War (USA), ridden by D. O'Brien, winner and Creme De La (USA), ridden by P.J. Smullen, placed second, where it appeared both horses came off their intended racing lines and collided. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards considered the interference to be accidental and they took no further action. The Stewards interviewed Turf Club Starter Derek Cullen, Turf Club Clerk of the Course Val O'Connell and Starting Stalls technician Jason Grogan regarding their concerns about using the Starting Stalls today due to the direction and strength of the winds prior to racing. Evidence was heard from all three individuals who stated that the wind was gusting head on into the stalls preventing the front doors from opening effectively on occasion. The Stewards gave permission for the stalls to be tested once more prior to racing which was witnessed by N.G. McCullagh, rider, representing all the riders, and which the Stewards viewed on camera and as the gusting winds had dropped in the meantime, the stalls functioned correctly, and N.G. McCullagh reported to the Stewards that the riders were satisfied to use the Starting Stalls for the first race. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards agreed that the Starting Stalls be used for the first race and to monitor the situation for the rest of the day. Subsequently, the Starting Stalls were used for all races.
