He has been very unlucky - he was going to be fourth here (early last month) when a horse took him out at the last. He's slow but he stays going. Paul was very good on him. The Stewards interviewed P.J. Cawley, rider of Aldo The Apache, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. In his evidence, P.J. Cawley stated that he was in a tight finish and the extra hit was in the heat of the moment. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that P.J. Cawley was in breach of R10(3)(g) by using his whip with excessive frequency. J.C. Gainford, rider of Grangeclare Native trained by Mrs Denise Foster, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount slipped on the turn into the straight

J.P. O'Sullivan, rider of Xquisite trained by C.A.McBratney, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount jumped poorly throughout this race

The Stewards requested a report from C.A.Murphy, trainer, as to the apparent improvement in form of Aldo The Apache, placed first, as compared with its previous run at Clonmel on the 13th May when finishing eleventh of fourteen runners. C.A. Murphy reported that his charge lined up wide at Clonmel but missed the break, was detached going to the first hurdle and was unable to get into the race thereafter. He also referred to the run at Down Royal on the 3rd May where his charge was going to be placed but was taken out of the race by a loose horse at the final hurdle. Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the content of the report.
