An enquiry was held to consider whether Ross Turner, the rider of Cawthorne (GB), which fell at the final hurdle, had continued in the race when it was contrary to the gelding’s welfare.
The rider and the Veterinary Officer were interviewed and recordings of the incident were viewed.
The Veterinary Officer stated that, having spoken to the Veterinary Surgeon who was following the field in the convoy and attended Cawthorne (GB) when it fell, the gelding was recumbent for three to four minutes and appeared to be very tired; however a subsequent post-race examination of Cawthorne (GB) when it had recovered failed to reveal any further abnormalities.
Turner was suspended for 8 days as he had failed to pull up his mount when it had no more to give and was tailed off through fatigue.
