A query was raised with Fergal O'Brien to consider why he was running Billy The Squid (IRE) here at Ffos Las on going described as Good, Good to Soft in places, having declared the gelding a non-runner at Southwell on 4 May 2021 on ground with the same official description.
The trainer stated that the race at Southwell was over 2 miles 4 furlongs and with a doubt over whether Billy The Squid (IRE) would appreciate the trip on that occasion he was happier to try the gelding on Good, Good to Soft in places going over today’s shorter distance of 2 miles.
The winner, Easkey Lad (IRE), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Ffos Las on 10 May 2021 where the gelding finished sixth of the nine finishers, beaten by 32¼ lengths over 2 miles 4 furlongs.
Dai Burchell’s explanation that Easkey Lad (IRE) may have been suited by the drop down in trip to 2 miles on this occasion, was noted.
The gelding was routine tested.
Ben Jones, the rider of the winner, Easkey Lad (IRE), was suspended for 2 days for using his whip above the permitted level from approaching the third-last hurdle.
