Permission was given for Whistledown (GB) to be mounted in the chute and wear a red hood to the start and for Smarden Flyer (IRE) to wear a red hood to the start.

Whistledown (GB) made contact with the running rail in the chute.

After being checked by the Veterinary Surgeon at the Start, the filly was deemed fit to race.

An enquiry was held to consider interference shortly after the start when Showdiemlad (IRE), unplaced, ridden by William Carson, interfered with Dazzerling (IRE), placed third, ridden by Pat Cosgrave.

Carson was cautioned for careless riding in that he manoevured his horse left-handed when insufficiently clear of a free-running Dazzerling (IRE) causing Cosgrave to take a precautionary check.

The winner, Whistledown (GB), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Chepstow on 8 July 2022 where the filly finished fifth of six, beaten by 5½ lengths.

The representative of Mick Channon’s explanation that Whistledown (GB) appeared to benefit from the step up in trip from 6 furlongs to 7 furlongs and the removal of the Hood on this occasion, was noted.

The performance of Volenti (IRE), which started second-favourite and finished last of the nine runners, beaten by 9 lengths, was considered.

Adam West could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance other than Volenti (IRE) may have been unsuited by the large field size today in comparison with its previous run also at Epsom on 14 July 2022, was noted.

Following the race, Morgan Cole, the rider of Essencial (IRE), placed fifth, and Joey Haynes, the rider of Smarden Flyer (IRE), placed sixth, both reported that their mounts hung left-handed.
