P.J. Smullen, rider of Ortiga, trained by Edward Lynam, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was very slow away from the stalls having missed the break. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Ortiga, ridden by P.J. Smullen, placed fifth and trained by Edward Lynam. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. P.J. Smullen, stated that he was aware that this filly was a very temperamental type prior to the race and that his instructions were to get her to break with the other runners, get her settled as quickly as possible and to do the best he could. He explained how his mount missed the break from stalls and lost several lengths before running very free and green at different stages throughout the race. He added that his mount was too green to switch to the outside in an attempt to continue tracking the more fancied runners and therefore opted to run down the rails where she ran to the line under hands and heels. Edward Lynam confirmed the instructions given and expressed his satisfaction with the ride. He stated that this filly was very temperamental and explained the difficulties incurred when training her to load and break from stalls, he further added that he expected his charge to benefit from the experience of today. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Ortiga was found to be post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanation offered. Mr David McCorkell, trainee Acting Steward, was present for this enquiry.
