An enquiry was held into the running and riding of A Distant Place (IRE), ridden by Jonjo O’Neill Jr.
and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, which appeared to be ridden with tender handling when turning into the home straight, before finishing fourth of nine runners, beaten by 16 lengths.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, found it to be slightly lame when trotted up post-race.
The rider stated that his instructions had been to ride the gelding up with the pace if possible.
He added that the field had gone a very good gallop and he felt that A Distant Place (IRE) was outpaced by this fast pace, jumped novicey and slightly left-handed throughout.
He further added that when turning into the home straight, the gelding had been slightly hampered, a fact which he reported at scales, before running on past tired horses in the final stages of the race.
The representative of Jonjo O’Neill confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied that the ride accorded with those instructions.
Their explanations were noted.
