An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after 2 instances of interference inside the final furlong involving the winner, Beltane (IRE), ridden by Shane Gray and Grigadale (IRE), placed second, ridden by Ben Curtis.
The Stewards considered that the interference had improved the placing of Beltane (IRE) as the bump that Grigadale (IRE) received in the first incident, approaching ½ furlong out, caused the gelding to be crowded for room and become unbalanced.
In the second incident inside the final ½ furlong, Grigadale (IRE) received a significant bump, losing ground and momentum with no time to recover with the winning margin being a head and revised the placings as follows: First: Grigadale (IRE); Second: Beltane (IRE); Third: Classy Al (GB); Fourth: Starshiba (GB).
The Stewards considered the first incident to be accidental, in that Beltane (IRE) lugged quickly left, before being corrected, crowding Grigadale (IRE) and causing the gelding to become unbalanced.
In the second incident approaching the line, Gray was suspended for 2 days for careless riding as he had used his whip when his mount was already lugging left-handed, giving a significant bump to Grigadale (IRE) which caused the gelding to lose ground and momentum.
The performance of Spacer (IRE), which finished unplaced, was considered.
It was noted that the representative of David Loughnane could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination, during routine testing of Spacer (IRE), failed to reveal any abnormalities.
