An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after two potential incidents of interference from the second last fence, involving the winner Real Stone (GB), ridden by Harry Skelton and Another Crick (GB), placed second, ridden by Tom O’Brien.
In the first incident it was established that at the second last fence, Real Stone (GB) had jumped sharply left-handed giving a bump to Another Crick (GB) on landing.
Whilst in the second incident the Stewards deemed there to be no interference, as on the approach to the last fence, Real Stone (GB) and Another Crick (GB) were racing tightly when Another Crick (GB) appeared to lug left-handed away from Real Stone (GB), despite that horse keeping to its racing line, causing O’Brien to have to pause in his riding to keep Another Crick (GB) on the course due to the last fence been positioned slightly off the inside running rail.
The Stewards considered that the first incident of interference was accidental and had not improved Real Stone (GB)’s placing in that, although a bump of significance, Another Crick (GB) appeared to lose little momentum as a result and it was only in the final strides that the gelding began to make significant inroads on Real Stone (GB), with the winning distance being ½ a length at the line.
Due to the second incident not been caused by Real Stone (GB), the Stewards did not take the effect of O’Brien’s correctional riding into account when considering the placings.
