The plan was to go to Limerick last week but he had a bit of an issue and couldn’t run. I was very keen to run before we went to the Curragh on Derby weekend and there weren’t any suitable races for him so I said to the lads we’d stick him into this. We are thinking of dropping back in trip to a mile at the Curragh anyway so I said we could give him a bit of a sharpener at Fairyhouse and see how that goes. Thomas Gibney, trainer
R. Whearty, rider of Booyea, trained by Thomas Gibney, reported to the Clerk of the Scales that his mount leaned right in the straight when he hit the front
D.P. McDonogh, rider of Gleneagle Bay, trained by Joseph Patrick O'Brien, reported to the Clerk of the Scales that his mount was hampered at the furlong pole
The Raceday Stewards enquired into possible interference in the closing stages involving Gleneagle Bay, ridden by D.P. McDonogh, placed second, and Booyea, ridden by R. Whearty, placed first, where it appeared that interference may have occurred. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. D.P. McDonogh stated that his mount got unbalanced on its own accord and shortly afterwards suffered interference from its outside causing him to check He concluded by stating that he would have been unlucky not to finish second and was not satisfied the incident cost him the race. R. Whearty stated that his mount ducked right after passing the runner up on the quick ground and took advantage of loose contact when he took his hand off the rein to use his whip. He was satisfied he had not improved his finishing position as a result of the interference caused. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards were of the opinion that while Booyea had caused interference to Gleneagle Bay in that he did not improve his finishing position as a result of this interference so they made no alteration to the Judge’s placings. They were, however, of the opinion that R. Whearty, was in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly and having considered his record in this regard (second offence), the Raceday Stewards suspended him for two racedays. In considering a penalty, the Raceday Stewards felt that there were mitigating factors in this case and imposed a penalty below the guidelines on this occasion
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer reported to the Raceday Stewards that Something Nice trained by Michael Mulvany had blood at both nostrils post race.
