- Stewards Report
The winner, The Corporal (IRE) appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Newmarket on 27 June 2019 where the gelding finished fifth of the seven runners, beaten by 19 ¾ lengths.
Chris Wall’s explanation that the gelding may have appreciated the drop in class and the drop back in trip to 1 mile and 2 furlongs on this occasion after finishing unplaced over 1 Mile and 4 Furlongs, at Newmarket last time out, was noted.
The Corporal (IRE) was routine tested.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Rock The Cradle (IRE), ridden by Shane Kelly and trained by Ed Vaughan, which travelled strongly on the bridle up to the furlong pole before being asked for an effort, staying on to finish second, beaten 1 ¼ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
He stated that the gelding had travelled extremely well and that he believed it would quicken up and go on to win the race comfortably.
However when asked for an effort approaching the furlong pole, the gelding failed to quicken and stayed on one paced to the finish second.
He further added that in hindsight if he were to ride the race again, he may have ridden the gelding with more restraint.
Subsequently Ed Vaughan reported, that in his opinion, Rock The Cradle (IRE) failed to stay the 1 mile and 2 furlongs trip on this occasion and will be dropped back to 1 mile in the future.
Their explanations were noted.
The performance of Edgar Allan Poe (IRE), which finished unplaced, was considered.
Phil Dennis reported that the gelding ran flat and the representative for Rebecca Bastiman’s explanation that after several runs within quick succession, believed that Edgar Allan Poe (IRE), may be in need of a break, was noted.
