A shorthead was the difference between Unwritten Rule and Washington Irving on the line with Unwritten Rule denying the then third favourite for the Derby. A Galway maiden winner in August of last year it was a good performance by the grey son of Dalakhani whose best trip is a mile and a half according to Dermot Weld.
The six runners went along in single file for a long way with the winner taking up third spot for a long way but when four came together in a line over a furlong out, it was the grey who came out to finish strongest.
Washington Irving was given a very patient ride by Murtagh and indeed was fifth going past the furlong pole but he finished well after being switched to the far side to just fail.
Houston Dynimo finished best of the rest and he should be back winning again before long over anything between a mile and a mile on a quarter on good ground. This was his first venture over the trip which was three furlongs further than what he had won over.
Hindu Kush has now failed to make an impression in all three of his starts although this seasonal debut was probably better than the two last year and Dirar had attempted to make all but he appeared not to get home and being a Dundalk winner, would suggest the better the ground, the more effective he would be.
Chevie was simply outclassed on this occasion.
