A query was raised to consider why Sheila Lewis, was running Volcano (FR) here at Aintree on going described as Good, having reported that the gelding would have preferred a slower surface following its last run at Ffos Las on 1 April 2021 on ground described as Good to Soft, Good in places.
The trainer stated that when she had entered the horse, the going had been softer than today's official description and given that it was proving difficult to find races over the right trip that Volcano (FR) was indeed eligible for and in the interest of getting the gelding's preparation underway, she was happy for him to take his chance on this occasion.
An enquiry was held to consider interference at the end of the back straight on the first circuit involving The Grand Visir (GB), placed fifth, ridden by Charlie Todd; Dell' Arca (IRE), placed seventh, ridden by Fergus Gillard and The Sweeney (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Jack Wildman.
As a 7lb claiming conditional, Wildman was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
Todd was suspended for 3 days for careless riding as he had allowed his mount to drift left-handed without correction when insufficiently clear, causing sustained crowding to The Sweeney (IRE) which lost its position and in turn made contact with DELL’ ARCA (IRE) on the rail.
