Permission was given for Heure de Gloire (FR) to go early to post.
Aidan Coleman, the rider of Rock On Rita (IRE), which started favourite and finished third, beaten ¾ of a length for second place, was questioned regarding his riding in the home straight.
Coleman stated that his instructions had been to ride Rock On Rita (IRE) fairly prominently but with cover as the mare had shown a tendency to race keenly.
He added that after taking its time to settle, he had urged Rock On Rita (IRE) to close on the leaders coming down the hill but when asked for an effort after the fourth-last hurdle the mare had hung badly left-handed in behind rivals, a fact he had reported at Scales.
He further added that he had been unable to ride Rock On Rita (IRE) under a full drive as the mare had continually hung left-handed and he therefore rode a hands and heels finish, passing beaten horses and only got to within ¾ of a length of Chillabella (GB), placed second, due to that mare tiring.
The Veterinary Officer subsequently reported that a post-race examination of Rock On Rita (IRE) appeared to show the mare had sustained a knock to its right-fore knee and there was heat in that joint.
Coleman’s explanation was noted.
