An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Smart Lass (IRE), ridden by Alisa McClung and trained by Iain Jardine, which settled in the rear of the field and then appeared to be tenderly ridden from the third last hurdle until the line to finish fifth beaten 9 ½ lengths.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination during routine testing of Smart Lass (IRE) found the mare to be slightly lame left fore.
The rider stated that her instructions were to sit midfield in order to get Smart Lass (IRE) to settle as she has a tendency to run keen and to obtain the best possible placing.
She added that she was conscious to get Smart Lass (IRE) to settle as she was keen in the early stages, then rode the mare out hands and heels to obtain in her opinion, the best possible placing.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and that she was satisfied that the ride accorded with those instructions.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Conor O’Farrell reported that Jackhammer (IRE), unplaced, ran too freely.
