An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Prefontaine (IRE), ridden by Jonjo O'Neill Jr and trained by Jonjo O'Neill, which was settled towards the rear of the four runners for the majority of the race where the gelding jumped deliberately, and plugged on at the one pace under apparent tender handling to finish second of three finishers, beaten by 18 lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
O'Neill stated that his instructions were to get Prefontaine (IRE) into a good rhythm and get him jumping.
He added that Prefontaine (IRE) is not the best jumper and can be ungenuine at times, as he demonstrated at Huntingdon last time out where he unseated O'Neill at the second flight.
He explained that the gelding had been slightly hampered by the faller at the fourth last hurdle, and rounding the final bend he felt he would make no impression on the winner and therefore gave Prefontaine (IRE) a hands and heels ride and concentrated on getting the gelding to jump round and finish his race.
His explanations were noted.
