The trainer was telling me it was trainer error the last day, but it wasn’t as the ground was beautiful on Champions Weekend and he’s just told us that we’ll only run him again on slower than good. . He is ground dependent and soft is his ideal ground. He absolutely owes us nothing and has been a great servant for Vincent and Geraldine (Gaul) who are great supporters of ours. . We had him in at Cork the other day, but the ground was just on the yielding side of good and with this coming up, we weren’t going to chance that. . Himself and Mutasarref are two of the stalwarts of the yard and they could meet in the Knockaire at Leopardstown (on October 20).

he's a lovely horse and that's a nice bonus as it wasn't on the agenda as he's in the middle of a holiday at the minute, aiming for an autumn campaign. Kerri (daughter) rides him every day and he just leads two-year-olds. We're trying to just keep him ticking over and give him his break. He qualified for this race, you don't expect to get this ground at this time of the year and it just fell right for him. Colin said he thought he was going to win hands-and-heels and then had a blow so he had to give him a few flicks. I thought he'd need this as we haven't revved him up and that will leave him set up and now I can get him revved up for September, onwards. He's a star and I'm delighted for Vincent and Geraldine (Gaul, owners), he's just been a lovely horse for them.

That’s more like it, but Colin said it turned into a bit of a sprint which probably suited him and maybe gives a false reading on the horse. He’s probably between trips, not an out-an-out miler and not quick enough for the proper sprints anymore. He loves the ground and you can see that with his conformation and his action. I thought that type of race was within his remit, but his last two runs didn’t fill me with any confidence. Seven furlongs to a mile and Listed or Group 3 is his thing. You will never see him on anything quicker than good to soft. The only negative is that Vincent (Gaul, owner) is not here today as he’s at home at a house party. He loves his racing and it’s a pity he’s not here to see him.

Ger is beating himself up saying that we were running him over the wrong trip, but I wouldn't take that too literally. He won over six at the start of the season and he's just very ground dependent. He's been a bit disappointing in his last couple of runs and we said we'd give him one last throw of the dice and step him up. We thought if he gets the trip he has the ability to be a good horse on that ground and it duly happened. He looked impressive there as they went hard and he has enough pace to sit in the box seat and pick them off. It opens things up for next season. We'll look at the start of the season and the end of the season on softer or slower ground. Now we can go any trip. We're delighted and delighted to get Colin one.

we were worried about the good to firm ground today as he is very ground dependent but were pleasantly surprised when we put the stick in the ground and it was beautiful good ground. However that's as quick as he wants it and grows another leg when there is juice in it. Colin (Keane) said he is after getting very strong over the winter and has matured big time. One day if all the conditions went in his favour, there is a big pot in him. He'll be entered for all the big sprints later in the year, the Haydock Sprint Cup and British Champions Sprint Stakes in Ascot (in October) over six furlongs and the softer the better for him.

It was great to level it for the boss and then to go and beat it for the boss is even better. It hasn't sunk in and probably won't until we start on zero next year and we're looking back on it. We try to beat every year's tally, we mightn't have a year like this again for a while so we'll appreciate it while it's here. Colin is a credit to himself, his family and the whole racing industry. He's a fine example of what a champion jockey should be. He keeps himself to himself and lets his riding do the talking. You see Billy Lee going over to shake his hand after the race and that tells you all you need to know about the huge respect he has in the weighing room. He's just a genuinely good guy. The industry is full of people trying to make heroes out of x, y and z but Colin has done it his way, the old-fashioned way, his riding doing all the talking. . Every winner he rides from now until the end of the season is going to be a record and, you know what, next season he will want to better whatever total he finishes with this season so he is going to keep us on our toes!

It’s great for Vincent and Geraldine Gaul who bought this one as a foal but it has taken all this time for him to come right. He has a high knee action so we were waiting for the ground.
