Topofthecotswolds (IRE) wore earplugs throughout the race.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Meldrum Lad (IRE), ridden by Miss Becky Smith and trained by Justin Landy which was held up in the rear early until improving its position around the outside of the field on the final circuit, whereupon it appeared to be tenderly ridden from jumping the final fence in the back straight until being asked for an effort turning into the home straight and staying on to finish third, beaten by 9 lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that her instructions were to drop the gelding out and get Meldrum Lad (IRE) settled as she has done when winning four races on him in the past.
Smith explained that the gelding is a very keen type, and was particularly so on this occasion due to the slow pace and not having ran for 83 days.
She further added that she kept the gelding wide in an attempt to find better ground and after initially being outpaced when the tempo increased, Meldrum Lad (IRE) did not find as much as she had anticipated and stayed on at one pace in the home straight.
The trainer stated that he was satisfied with the ride and it accorded with his instructions given, before adding that, in his opinion, the race had not been run to suit Meldrum Lad (IRE), on this occasion.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Daniel Sansom reported that Kentford Heiress (GB), unplaced, made several jumping errors and the Veterinary Officer reported that Exxaro (IRE), placed eighth, lost its left fore shoe.
