An enquiry was held to consider whether Sean Quinlan, the rider of Joke Dancer (GB), had continued in the race when the gelding appeared to be tiring, having raced prominently throughout, before falling at the final fence.
Quinlan was interviewed and recordings of the incident were viewed.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination revealed the gelding to be recovering within normal parameters.
Quinlan explained that Joke Dancer (GB) had been travelling and jumping well throughout the race and that he considered the gelding was losing ground due to the field quickening up off the home bend and his mount becoming one paced, on this step up in trip to 3 miles and 1½ furlongs.
Quinlan added that having jumped the previous fences in the home straight satisfactorily, he considered that Joke Dancer (GB) had sufficient speed and momentum to safely jump the last, however the gelding stepped at the fence and subsequently fell.
His explanation was noted.
