- Stewards Report
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of GOODGIRLTERESA (IRE). ridden by Micheal Nolan and trained by Kayley Woollacott, which was held up in the rear and considerately handled throughout, before being asked for an effort after jumping the second last fence to finish third of the three finishers, beaten by 14 ½ lengths. The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the mare, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities. The rider stated that his instructions were to drop GOODGIRLTERESA (IRE) in and try to get the mare to relax as she had been very keen when he had previously ridden her over hurdles and also when schooling her over fences at home. He added that GOODGIRLTERESA (IRE) did not jump fluently in the early stages due to running freely, however, he found a nice rhythm from entering the home straight with a circuit to run. He further added that the leaders increased the tempo going out onto the final circuit, although GOODGIRLTERESA (IRE) continued to travel well whilst being held together. The rider also explained that approaching the final four fences, he felt that the mare was close enough to the leaders to mount a challenge before blowing up half-way down the straight and making a significant jumping error at the final fence but in his opinion had still obtained the best possible placing. The representative of the trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that the ride accorded with them and was satisfied with the manner in which GOODGIRLTERESA (IRE) had been ridden. Their explanations were noted.
An enquiry was held to consider why Nicky Henderson was running THOMAS CAMPBELL here at Ludlow on going described as Good, having declared the gelding a non-runner at Stratford-On-Avon on 1 November 2018 on ground with the same official description. The representative of the trainer stated that, in the opinion of the Assistant trainer who had walked the course at Stratford-On-Avon, the ground on that occasion was riding faster than the official description, particularly on the take-offs and landings. The representative added that Nico de Boinville, who is familiar with the gelding and had ridden at Ludlow earlier on the card, was of the opinion that the ground on this occasion was more suitable for THOMAS CAMPBELL and they were therefore happy for the gelding to take its chance. Her explanation was noted.
