On the basis of trainer Tom Hogan's comments after this farcical Grade 3 contest you couldn't but be extremely disappointed with the effort of Earth Magic as Kalderon took home the ?29,267.

Over a trip that appeared too long for the winner, and on ground which was far from ideal the eight-year-old - who was withdrawn late from the Champion Hurdle ? ran out a two and a half length winner.

Hogan quipped, ?That worked out as a good bit of work," before revealing, ?He has done nothing since we brought him home from Cheltenham and when I saw the situation that there was only one horse declared I rang my son told him to take him out of the field and give him a blow."

Aintree or Punchestown will be on the agenda now for the winner who blundered two out but soon went on to score in a time that was over half a minute slower than last year.

Tom Doyle on Earth Magic seemed reluctant to go on and try and force his opponent into submission when there was a doubt over the staying qualities of Kalderon and it was clear from a long way out that he was going to struggle here.

Even when given the opening at the second last he was still under too much pressure to go on and it is slightly puzzling to think that he did not set a stronger pace to proceedings.
