There was a quick double for Billy Lee in the Leopardstown.com Median Auction Maiden when Paddy Twomey’s Beamish made a winning debut.
The chestnut was always likely to be useful for a Corkonian to place such a moniker aboard, and the Teofilo colt could hardly have made a better start.
By the same sire of course, as the Gold Cup hero from earlier, Subjectivist, the well-supported successful 9/4 joint favourite was pushed along and towards the rear early.
Hampered after a furlong, Beamish made swift progress to chase the leaders after five furlongs. Second halfway, the three-year-old pressed the leader three furlongs out.
Ridden two furlongs out, the French-bred led over a furlong out, keeping on strongly in the final furlong to beat fellow market-leader Kazakdaria by three lengths.
Lee won the preceding event aboard Coill Na Sionainne for Willie McCreery.
“I bought him as a yearling and he’s a very uncomplicated horse,” said Twomey.
“It took until this year to be strong enough to be ready. His pedigree says that he should be a three-year-old and onwards and it does exactly what it says on the tin.
“He’s just started doing fast work this spring and he hasn’t put a foot wrong. I knew he’d be green but I was hopeful that he would run a nice race.
“I haven’t thought past today but he has a nice way of going and he likes that fast ground.”
The Stewards enquired into an incident inside the final furlong involving Boulette ridden by K.J. Manning, placed third, Harry's Legacy (GB), ridden by C.D. Hayes, placed fifth and Clew Bay ridden by S. Foley, unplaced, where it appeared that interference had taken place. In evidence S. Foley stated that his mount picked up about two furlongs out but the run petered out and the gap closed from both sides. C.D. Hayes stated that his mount came to the end of his run and got unbalanced which led to getting tangled with Clew Bay. K.J. Manning stated that his mount was lugging out and he felt he was free of both C.D. Hayes and S. Foley at the time of the incident. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards took no further action other than to advise C.D. Hayes to ride with more care.
