The Red Menace made a winning chase debut at Downpatrick today as the Noel Meade trained gelding benefitted from a well judged Sean Flanagan ride to win the Caldwell Wedding Anniversary Beginners Chase.

The son of Mountain High was a dual-bumper and Leopardstown maiden hurdle winner and while he failed to win in his latest six hurdles starts, today came from off the pace to get up close home when beating runner-up Knock On Steel by three parts of a length.

Meade later said "he lacks a gear. He took to jumping fences very well at home and we hoped that just might give him a little bit extra.

"He stays three miles really well and likes goodish ground. We'll kick on until the winter comes in I suppose. We'll see where we go.

"I'd say he will probably be a little bit better at this than he was over hurdles. He just lacked that gear."
