Soprano proves tough nut

Sun 11th Apr 2010, 15:31

Celtic Soprano battled tenaciously to claim the www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk Handicap at the Curragh for in-form trainer Paul Deegan.

Willie Supple sent his mount to the front in the early stages and she responded well when tackled in the final furlong. Tovaria threw down a strong challenge and just got to the front at the furlong pole but Celtic Soprano refused to back down and got ahead again close home for a neck success.

"She's an absolute superstar. They don't come any more genuine, she's tough as nails and I love her to bits. She's a smashing filly," said Deegan.

"Her work has been good and she's improved again over the winter. She's won four now and we'll try and get some black type.

"The 1m6f Listed Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan will be the next port of call.

"It was a brilliant ride from Willie. He took it up when there was no pace on and she loved it in front."
