The Pat Martin-trained Pretty Smart proved very tough to repel the challenge of Eglish in the opening claimer at Dundalk.
Mikey Sheehy 's mount bounced out to lead in the seven-furlong contest but was stalked by the smooth travelling Eglish passing the two pole.
There was nothing between the pair as they fought it out inside the final furlong with Eglish taking a narrow lead in the closing stages.
14/1 shot Pretty Smart found more close home, however, to get back up and secure a neck win over the 13/8 favourite.
Sheehy said afterwards: "I was keen to bowl away and make the running. I tried to take her back a bit and steady it up bearing in mind the trip, but she was always taking me forward and a little bit keen in my hands.
"In fairness to her, she stuck at it well. Colin( Keane on Eglish) actually headed me a furlong from the line and I battled back to beat him.
"She's a hardy bit of stuff and she's a tricky little customer but when she wants it, she's not too bad. On her going day, she is well able."
Noel Kelly claimed the sixth placed Clarinbridge for €6,000.
