Russian Bill came out on the right side of a head-bobber with Cappacon in Leopardstown's bumper.
The pair fought out a thrilling battle in the final furlong, however, Nina Carberry and Russian Bill on the outside always looked to be reeling in their rival and duly grabbed the verdict by a nose from Richie Kiely and Cappacon. The winner was returned at 7/1 with the runner-up 8s.
Noel Meade said: "I was nearly going to run him in Down Royal yesterday, but decided to come here as he stays and stays. You wouldn't think it the way he's bred.
"He's very lairy and when he got to the front he half pulled himself up. He jumps well and will go over hurdles now.
"He's named after another cowboy. It's about time I got a winner as all the Meath trainers are winning here over the last few days."
The Stewards interviewed Mr R.J. Kiely, rider of Cappacon, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr R.J. Kiely was in breach of R10(3)(f) by using his whip with excessive force and frequency. Consequently he was suspended for six race days.
