After Carlow's great win over Kildare yesterday in the Leinster Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final, Robin De Carlow was an apt winner of the last at Ballinrobe this evening, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Flat Race.
Purchased for E40,000 as a three-year-old, the daughter of Robin Des Champs was sent off a well-supported 5/4 favourite in the colours of the Supreme Horse Racing Club.
Trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by his son Patrick, the brown five-year-old raced in mid-division on the outer and was pushed along at times.
She took closer order from three furlongs out, and was ridden to the front over a furlong from home, keeping on well from there to score by four lengths. The Caddy Rose (6/1) finished second under Mark O'Hare for Noel Meade, while The Princetonian (6/1) was sixteen lengths back in third for Derek O'Connor and Jessica Harrington.
The winning rider said afterwards: "She was just very green. I;d said to the boys (the owners) beforehand that she'd come on for the race mentally.
"That was the case as it turned out and at the start I couldn't get her to line-up in amongst the horses and I had to stay wide on her.
"She was then trying to hang away from the others but every time I asked her she was going forward for me and I think she'll improve a lot mentally from that race.
"She's not the biggest mare but she has an engine.
"It was nearly as good as the victory over Kildare yesterday!"
STEWARDS REPORT
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that The Princetonian trained by Mrs John Harrington was found post race to have pulled her left fore shoe.
