Legend impresses on third start for Byrnes
The feature event on this evenings card, which was again marred by non-runners, the McSweeney Arms Hotel Handicap Chase, went to another favourite, this time in the shape of 2/1 shot Bideford Legend for trainer Charles Byrnes and jockey Philip Enright.
Having just his third start since changing yards (was with Paul Flynn), the 7yo Flying Legend gelding marginally led over the second last and went a few lengths clear approaching the final fence, which he jumped well and extended the distance to win by a comfortable eight lengths at the finish from Armaramak back in second.
This was just his second racecourse win, having won a Novice Chase around the course at the massive odds of 50/1 back in July of '09.
Only five of the eleven who started finished the race, with Warcraft Natal Knock on the Head, Kilcrea Castle Caim Hill and Anothercoppercoast all pulling up.
Charles Byrnes who was enjoying his second winner of the Festival said afterwards: "He will be kept going for the summer and will probably go to Listowel. His is owned locally by the Twiss family from Killorglin."
