Joncol returns in style
Joncol made a winning return to action when claiming the John Meagher Memorial Chase at Thurles this afternoon.
Paul Nolan 's charge, out of action since third in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown last February, shook off any ring rust with a convincing success in the Listed event.
Barry Geraghty, completing a quick double, sat in behind leader Cooldine in the four-runner contest before making his move turning for home.
The Bob's Return gelding was asked to join the front-running 6/4 favourite at the second last and edged ahead on the run to the final fence.
Geraghty kept his mount going on the run-in to post a 12-length winning margin at odds of 7/4.
It was a smart performance by the 2010 Hennessy winner, who was giving the runner-up 10lb.
"They went a good consistent pace on that ground. Barry thought he was beat going to the second last but he filled himself up again after that," said Nolan.
"He'll definately come on a lot for the run. I'm just hoping to have a clear run with him this season.
"He's had a lot of ifs and buts the last few seasons but thank god there are no hiccups so far this time.
"I think if everything goes right he could be a 10lb better horse than the highest rating he has achieved so far."
The Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury later this month is on the radar for the winner and Nolan added:-
"We'll see how he comes out of this. That has been the plan but we'll also think about the John Durkan at Punchestown - a race he has won before.
"This is an ideal way to start the season."
