Jon Ess produced a fine round of jumping from the front to open his account over timber in the first division of the Goffs Supporting Irish Racing Maiden Hurdle at Gowran.

Ricky Doyle had the 9/2 shot to the fore throughout in the two-mile contest and they had 1/2 hotpot Meticulous for company for most of the journey.

Conor O'Dwyer 's charge was notable slicker over his jumps and kicked on at the second last. Coolbane Boy came through to take the runner-up spot but could only get within seven lengths of the winner.

Jon Ess was making his 14th appearance over hurdles and had been placed five times. He is a six-time winner on the Flat.

O’Dwyer said:- “I thought he was never going to win over hurdles. To win six on the Flat and get a hurdle win under his belt is amazing.

“We should have plenty of fun mixing it with him over the summer. The day he ran bad at the Curragh it was just too firm for him.

“It’s great for the syndicate. I doubt if he’ll turn out again at Galway as he seems to be good fresh. We’ll enjoy this and find something for him.”
