Frankford causes 33/1 upset
Bookmakers had a ‘screamer’ result in the T & V Novice Hurdle at Kilbeggan today, when 33/1 shot Frankford led home only five finishers, to provide Laois trainer Jeffrey Mulhern with his first winner.
Frankford, under Paddy Kennedy, had his rivals in trouble a long way out and although Aughwilliam Lady (13/8) did close the gap, the winning margin was four and a half lengths. 4/5 favourite Garlic Hill which gave chase to the winner, eventually pulled up on the run-in, when a tired fifth.
Mulhern, from Laois, later stated “Frankford was bred and originally raced by Michael Bowe (of Limestone Lad fame) and when I got the horse, Michael told me to wait for better ground with the horse. I’ve had him since Christmas but he has had a lot of setbacks but today’s ground was perfect for him. I’ve five horses in training, have had a few point to point winners, but this is my first racecourse winner.”
