Day Dream Boy and Phillip Enright won the two mile five furlong handicap hurdle in Limerick with a strong staying performance.

The eight-year-old in the cheekpieces bounced right back to form after a mid-division finish in Navan last month. He had a good spell between February and April this year when he won a Punchestown handicap hurdle and had a pair of runner-up finishes in Clonmel and Wexford.

Enright had him 10th of the 18 runners as they jumped the sixth last hurdle today. From there he made significant ground to move into second coming to the penultimate jump. On the run-in he got his head in front to deliver by half a length at 12/1. Rightville Boy (12/1 from 20/1 this morning) was the horse headed approaching the line and had to settle for second under Adrian Heskin. The gamble of the race and indeed the day, Bothair Clei who was heavily backed from 20s down to an SP of 6/1 got his supporters a place dividend in third. The 5/1 favourite Pals Leg rounded out the placings in fourth.

Trainer Edward Cawley said: “He’s a dour stayer. His dam won over three miles for me some time ago and he’s very like her. I’d like it if he jumped a little bit better.

“We’ll see how he pulls out of this, but he’s in on New Year’s Day at Fairyhouse.”
