Danehill Brook swept through inside the final furlong to land a bit of a gamble in the opening five furlong maiden at Down Royal.

The Danehill Dancer colt, who had shown speed before fading in Group 3 company on his debut at the Curragh, was as big as 6/1 this morning and returned 6/4 favourite on course.

Billy Lee settled in behind the leaders on the rail on David Wachman's charge before angling out for a run over a furlong from home.

Stable-mate Amygdal had hit the front at the furlong pole but was swept aside in the closing stages as the winner went on for a cosy length-and-a-half success.

The winner had finished last of nine behind Great White Eagle on his debut having overcome a slow start to lead the field until the two marker.

The winning rider said afterwards:- "He did it nicely. The first day over six furlongs he made it and got tired. Today I pulled him out and he quickened up.

"He's a smart horse and has lots of speed. It's about nurturing that speed."

Explaining the fact that stable jockey Wayne Lordan ended up on the lesser fancied mount Lee added:-

"Wayne was supposed to be in Doncaster today and I was riding Danehill Brook all week."
