He surprised me as I was running out of options and there weren't many races he could run in. I was just running him and didn't think he was fit enough to win. He stays very well, you could see that in the Cesarewitch (last October) and getting him fit for that was the aim. I didn't want a penalty going but we'll take this as it's a nice, old race to win. His next run depends on the penalty he gets for winning. He hates hurdles.

He is a very good jumper but hates jumping. He needs a bit of nice ground, doesn't want firm and was in really good order today but today was his day over hurdles. Hurdling really isn't for him but if the owner (Mrs Rita Byrne) wants he'll run at Punchestown but his main target is the Cesarewitch. He was third in it last year (behind Great White Shark) and whether or not we mind his mark until then I don't know, as there are nice pots between here and then.

he (Takarengo) had 75 and he wasn't getting a decent weight in a proper handicap so today was to try to get him right for next weekend or the weekend after. There is a €50,000 1m4f here next weekend and €10,000 race in Naas in two weeks time. I suppose he'll get a nice raise for that, he's probably entitled to, and it will give him a decent weight in either handicap. Whether he goes next weekend or to Naas I don't know. Then we'll think about hurdling or he could do anything, he's a good horse. He could be an Ebor horse next year, he's only a three-year-old, and he could even go further. He's a good well-bred horse and he's only learning his trade now. He was free early doors in maidens but has learned to settle now and race. The future is bright for him, I hope.

I thought the ground was going to be worse than that as I don’t think it’s heavy. It wasn’t a help when the two lads ran off the bend as the last thing this lad wants is to make his own running. We’ll try and sneak into a good handicap over a trip — a mile and six (furlongs) or two miles. At the moment he’s too low for the Cesarewitch. The first two came away well, and Ben said he kept pulling it out. The other horse came at him twice and he pulled out twice. He’d have no trouble over a longer trip. More than likely he will go hurdling.
