- Stewards Report
Southfield Vic (IRE), trained by Paul Nicholls, won at Newton Abbot the previous day.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a pre-race examination of the gelding deemed him fit to race.
Having reviewed recordings of the false start, the Starters were satisfied that no riders should be reported for contravening the starting procedures.
An enquiry was held to consider why Mr Matthew Fielding, the rider of Adrenalin Flight (IRE), placed second, had appeared to almost take the incorrect course approaching the all-weather bend on the first occasion.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the incident.
Mr Fielding explained that he had walked the course and acquainted himself with the course map prior to the race.
He added that Adrenalin Flight (IRE) had jumped right-handed and made contact with the winner, Southfield Vic (IRE), jumping the fence before the bend, at which point he moved the gelding left-handed in order to make room between him and Southfield Vic (IRE).
He further explained that Adrenalin Flight (IRE) was keen on the approach to the bend and hung left-handed, causing him to have to take evasive action at the last minute in order to keep the gelding on the right course.
His explanation was noted.
