An enquiry was held to consider why Sean Houlihan, the rider of Demopolis (FR), which finished fourth, beaten by 4 lengths for third, had continued in the race when the horse appeared to be very tired, pulling itself up to a trot on the run to the line.
The rider and the Veterinary Officer were interviewed and recordings of the incident were viewed.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Demopolis (FR) failed to reveal any abnormalities, and that the gelding had recovered within normal parameters.
Houlihan explained that the gelding was tiring after the final fence and had a made a respiratory noise, and he had moved Demopolis (FR) over towards the rail to find the better ground.
He further added that although Demopolis (FR) had returned to a trot in the closing stages, he had not felt it was contrary to the horse’s welfare to continue with a hands and heels ride, being that close to the finish line.
His explanation was noted.
Following the race, Georoid Harney reported that Fresh New Dawn (IRE), which was pulled up, was never travelling.
