The winner, Smooth Stepper (GB), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Lingfield on 23 January 2022 where the gelding finished tenth of fifteen runners, beaten by 47 lengths.
Alex Hales explained that the gelding had benefitted from what was, in his opinion, a weaker race.
The trainer’s explanation was noted.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of BELAMI DES PICTIONS (FR), which was pulled up, during routine testing, revealed that the gelding had an irregular heartbeat.
