The Dermot Weld trained Brosna Town opened his account at the third time of asking when staying on strongly under James Ryan to win the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden at Fairyhouse.
Fourth on his return over ten furlongs at Sligo last month, the Awtaad gelding was stepping up an additional two furlongs tonight.
Coming to deliver his challenge under Ryan over a furlong out, the 9/1 chance needed every yard of the longer trip to get the better of a sustained duel with runner-up Sundance Sioux
4/5f Soul Of Spain was pushed along to lead early in the straight but was done with well over a furlong out. He eventually faded to finish 5th.
James Ryan said: “Mr Weld said this galloping track would suit him a lot better and he got into a lovely rhythm.
“The second horse got me racing a bit earlier than I wanted to but in fairness my lad put his head down and galloped all the way through the line. He stayed every yard of it.
“That’s my first winner for Mr Weld. He’s been very good to me this season and hopefully we can keep it going.”
