There were several gambles in the extended two mile handicap hurdle at Roscommon and one of them came to fruition as Ted Bach delivered at 5/1.
He had traded at 11/1 in the morning and was backed down from an opening show of 8/1.
The six-year-old gelding made good headway through the field to lead at the second last, under Davy Russell, and was able to fend off the staying-on I Will Follow (9/1) on the run-in.
“He deserved that. He's in again on Thursday night in a maiden in Leopardstown. We'll see how he is and he might go. If not, he might go to Galway,” trainer Ken Budds said.
“He'll get a few pounds and should get in to one of the races there.
“I hope he'll learn from it and keep winning. It took him a while.”
Stephen Mahon 's Whenthewindblows was the real market mover. From a morning price of 50/1, his odds tumbled to 7/1 on the off for the in-form trainer.
The each-way money was landed as he raced prominently throughout but had no answers in second when Ted Bach took over and came home third. Constable Buckley also attracted considerable support from a morning price of 33/1 to an SP of 14/1. Agonisingly for his backers, he finished one spot out of the places in fifth.
